Proper Maintenance After Replacing Window Glass in Aluminium Frames

  February 9, 2024

Window glass replacement, an ordinary routine home improvement process, appears simple. However, appropriate care and maintenance after restoration are critical factors in extending a window’s life expectancy. In this blog, we’ll discuss some essential window maintenance guidelines to adhere to after installing window glass in an aluminium frame.

It is of great importance to ensure that the surface has been inspected for any loose glazing points or screws which hold on the glass in place. However, some of these may loosen naturally with time due to material expansions and contractions. Double-check that you have gone through all the circumferences of all window frames and tightened loose hardware. Re-caul with exterior-grade silicone caulk to seal gaps between the glass and frame. Doing so prevents water invasion, which manifests as increasing moisture and rotting termites. It is also essential to ensure that the window sill and channels are free of dirt as well. These places may become dust accumulation points, leaving insect nests and other materials that block the natural water drainage from these areas. Regularly clean the channels with a vacuum cleaner and a soft brush. It would help if you also cleaned the sills using a wet cloth to maintain their hygiene.

Be sure to check once a year for excess water penetration from external caulking around the windows and reapply if any is de-adhering or lifting. Sealing and ensuring the caulk integrity prevents leakages and drafts, not forgetting that it limits pest access points. Use a silicone caulk that is temperature-stable and paintable for exterior use. After removing, chop off the old caulk to ensure the new one sticks on. Shield recently replaced window glass from direct solar radiation exposure while the sealant finish sets—typically 1-2 weeks. Cover the glass with a light cloth drape or paper to protect it while still liquid. Do not put heavy things on the windowsills during this period. The curing sealant is temporarily weak until it completely dries and stiffens.

Practicing appropriate window operation and movement after glass installation is also required. Open and close the windows softly; don’t slam or force the window. Gentle movement can quickly shake the glazing points before fully stabilizing the window. The first few weeks require a limited operation to enable all things to settle well.

By observing the above maintenance tips, you can ensure that window replacement glass performs effectively for a long time. However, even with the necessary care, windows get problematic after a certain period. As such, one needs to contact a professional.
